Private Sale Versus a Formal Campaign
Bypass Business Brokers · 6 min
A formal campaign assumes the business can survive attention. Staff will hear. Competitors will hear. The owner will be asked to perform enthusiasm for months.
That structure suits some files. It is a poor fit for an MSP whose after-hours number is still the founder, or a VoIP book whose records live in a spreadsheet and a head.
What a private sale is for
A private sale is an introduction. Information is released because a genuine buyer asked, not because a timetable demanded a teaser.
It is the right tool when:
- discretion matters more than a wide net
- the owner will not last a long process
- the value is customers, not a photograph of the office
What it is not
It is not a hidden queue of people already waiting with cheques. Off-market language that implies a buyer is pre-attached is sales talk. Bypass will not use it.
If the network has no fit, you should hear that early, not after a theatre of documents.
Commission and control
An owner-managed path without a listing commission exists because many of these files cannot bear a percentage on a number nobody believes yet. You stay in the conversation. You decide what is shared.
If you want the formal version, there are firms that do that well. This site is for the other job.
